District Profile |

Chirang district falls under Lower BrahmaputraValley Agro-Climatic Zone.The climate of the districtis sub-tropical in nature with warm and humidsummer followed by dry and cool winter. Theaverage annual rainfall is 1900 mm out of which75% is received during monsoon months (June toSeptember). The monsoon months are wet andwinter is dry. Both pre and post monsoon monthshave unpredicted and erratic rainfall. The mean maximum and minimum temperature varies from330 to 380 C and 90 to 100C, respectively.Theaverage radiation is the highest during March –April, while overcast sky reduces the solar radiationto the least during July. The main source of economy of the district is agriculture. Soil is fertile and suitable for cultivation of various crops. More than 70% of the populationis directly involved in agriculture as their livelihood.Rice is the major crop of the district which takes upto 62% and 38% of cropped area during Kharif and Rabi seasons respectively. The district produces alarge variety of cereals. These are Maize, Wheat,other cereals, Tur, Gram, Lentil pea, Rabi pulses,Linseed, Castor, Seamum, Rape and Mustard. Inaddition to these a few non food crops like jute andmesta are also cultivated in the district.
